<description>Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations in Israel are very small. Most of the non- Religious Jews go to synagogues once in a year and if they do so they prefer the Orthodox synagogue. So they do when they circumcise their son or marry their children. Only few prefer to get marry through the Conservative or Reform procedure. Few even prefer civil marriage abroad
PASCAL RESPONDS: THAT IS LARGELY CORRECT-- AND I WOULD ADD THAT THIS IS THE CASE BECAUSE OF THE ABSENCE OF CHOICE, PRECISELY BECAUSE THE REFORM AND CONSERVATIVE CONGREGATIONS IN ISRAEL HAVE RELATIVELY LITTLE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS COMPARED TO OVERWHELMING STATE FUNDING FOR ORTHODOX CONGREGATIONS-- CIVIL MARRIAGE IN CYPRUS IS HARDLY AN ATTRACTIVE CHOICE FOR MANY ISRAELIS. WHERE I WOULD STRONGLY DIFFER WITH THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS COMMENT IS IN POINTING OUT THAT ROUGHLY 60% OF JEWS IN ISRAEL ARE NON-OBSERVANT OR &#039;SECULAR&#039; AND DO NOT GO TO ANY SYNAGOGUE, EVER.
